Bin Yamin Mollah, a vice-president candidate in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections backed by Chhatra Odhikar Parishad, has accused the university administration of creating artificial crises to delay the polls.
On Saturday, Yamin said officials were using excuses such as outdated photos and names on voter lists, as well as complications over non-resident students without updated hall cards, to stall preparations.
“If a movement is launched over these issues, clashes may follow, giving the authorities a pretext to declare the environment unfit for elections,” he said at Madhur Canteen.
Yamin alleged that while his repeated complaints to the administration went unanswered, the deadline for collecting nomination papers was extended by a day when a student organisation faced problems in one hall.
“We want to ask the university administration whose influence led to such a big decision. If such influence can be exerted, from whom can we expect a fair election?” he asked.
He also urged the university and media to arrange a “presidential debate” so candidates could be held accountable before students.
