Police have arrested a student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) amid overnight protests on campus.
Sreeshant Roy, a student of BUET’s Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, was arrested on Wednesday in a case filed under the Cyber Security Act at Chawkbazar Police Station.
BUET students began protests late on Tuesday night, accusing Sreeshant of sexually harassing a fellow student, hurting religious sentiments, and engaging in cyberbullying, and demanded his punishment.
In the morning, a university security officer filed a case at Chawkbazar Police Station, and police subsequently showed Sreeshant as arrested in connection with that case.
“A BUET security officer filed a case against him under the Cyber Security Act,” said Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Lalbagh Division Police.
“The case accuses him of making derogatory remarks about women in cyberspace. Some screenshots that hurt people’s religious sentiments were attached as evidence.”
When asked about the allegations of rape, the police official said: “There is no rape charge in the case. The main accusations are insulting women online and hurting religious sentiments.”
He added that Sreeshanth had been sent to jail through the court and that police might seek remand if necessary for investigation.
BUET students began their protest at midnight on Tuesday, accusing Sreeshanth of molesting a classmate, cyberbullying, and making comments that hurt religious values.
In response to the protests, the university administration suspended him and later announced that all ongoing term examinations scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday had been postponed.
