Authorities at Chittagong University have filed a case over the violent clashes between students and villagers, naming a local Jubo League leader as the prime accused.
The case was lodged at Hathazari Police Station on Tuesday afternoon, chief Abu Mahmud Kawsar Hossain told bdnews24.com.
He said the case named 95 individuals and included 800 to 1,000 unnamed suspects.
The officer declined to disclose the names of the accused or confirm whether political figures were among them.
The clashes broke out at midnight on Saturday following an altercation between a female student and a security guard at a building near the university’s Gate No. 2.
Confrontations between students and villagers, which began that night, continued throughout Sunday.
The case, filed by the university’s Deputy Registrar of Security Abdur Rahim, named local Jubo League leader Md Hanif as the prime accused, though his political identity was not mentioned in the complaint.
Most of the named suspects are reportedly activists of banned affiliate organisations of the Awami League.
The case statement alleged that on Saturday night and Sunday morning, the first ten accused carried out a planned attack on students.
It also claimed that they vandalised vehicles used by the proctorial body and police, as well as the chief security officer’s motorcycle, while assaulting students.
The attackers allegedly also targeted police, prompting the deployment of joint forces to restore order.
The following day, armed with sharp weapons, they allegedly assaulted students in Jobra village.
