Vice-president (VP) candidates from the two panels backed by Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal and Islami Chhatra Shibir have expressed confidence about their chances of the university's central students' union elections.

AKM Rakib, the VP candidate from the “Oikkoboddho Nirbhik Jobian”, supported by Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Odhikar Parishad, cast his vote at 9:30am on Tuesday in Room 212 of his own department, botany.

Meanwhile, Riyazul Islam, the VP candidate from the Odommo Jobian Oikko backed by Chhatra Shibir, UP Bangladesh, and Inqilab Moncho, cast his vote in Room 215 of the Management Studies department.

Speaking to journalists upon leaving the polling station, Rakib said: "The situation on campus has been positive since the morning. I hope it stays like this until the end.

“I have a long-standing relationship with the students and have received a very positive response from them. Regardless of who wins today, the ultimate victor will be Jagannath University."

Riyazul, on the other hand, said: "I have just cast my vote. If the Election Commission can maintain its neutrality until the finish, we will see a fair election,

“We are optimistic about a win. No matter who is elected at Jagannath University, we will provide our full cooperation from our side."

Voting in the first-ever Jagannath University Central Students' Union (JnUCSU) election is under way, nearly 20 years after the institution began operating as a university in Dhaka.

Polling started at 9am on Tuesday at 39 centres across five university buildings, with 178 booths in operation. Voting is scheduled to continue until 3pm.

More than 16,600 students are eligible to vote in the election, which will determine the leadership of the central union for a one-year term.

A total of 157 candidates, representing four panels as well as independent contenders, are contesting 21 positions.

Four major panels, including those backed by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Islami Chhatra Shibir, are in the race.
