East West University (EWU) has held its 25th convocation at the Aftabnagar Playground in Dhaka, awarding degrees to 1,857 students from undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
Nine students who achieved a CGPA of 4.0 out of 4.0 were awarded gold medals at the ceremony on Monday.
Prof Dr Mobasser Monem, chairman of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC), attended the convocation as the representative of the president, who is the chancellor of the university, and formally conferred degrees on the graduates.
Addressing the ceremony, Dr Monem said knowledge and skills gain real value when guided by moral principles. He urged graduates to take pride in their country and highlighted the role of young people in addressing national and global challenges, including social unrest and environmental degradation.
The convocation speaker, Tapan Chowdhury, managing director of Square Pharmaceuticals PLC, told graduates that the country needed ethical professionals and problem solvers, not just a skilled workforce. He said success should be measured by one’s impact on society rather than salary, designation or social media presence.
Prof Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, chairperson of EWU’s Board of Trustees and former governor of Bangladesh Bank, said the university had prioritised merit and transparency since its establishment. He expressed optimism that EWU graduates would contribute to building a society free from discrimination.
EWU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Shams Rahman urged graduates not to remain confined to the “comfort zone” of degree attainment, warning that complacency could hinder progress. He encouraged students to compete at a global level and to act as responsible citizens with strong moral values.
The convocation was attended by members of EWU’s Board of Trustees, senior university officials, faculty members, graduates and their guardians, as well as guests from various institutions.
