Shoppers in Dhaka continue to feel the squeeze as prices for essential food items show little sign of easing.

In just a week, the price of Sonali chicken has risen by Tk 30 to Tk 40 per kg, adding further strain to household budgets already under pressure from persistently high green chili prices.

Despite the jump in Sonali chicken rates, prices of broiler and country chickens remain stable across the capital’s markets.

Green chili, a staple in Bangladeshi cooking, has seen a slight dip compared with last week but remains expensive.

It is currently selling for Tk 240 per kg -- down Tk 80 -- but still high by normal standards.

Vendors cite a shortage in supply for the elevated price.

A visit to Mohammadpur Shia Mosque kitchen market, Krishi Market and Town Hall kitchen market on Friday reveals that vegetable prices remain stubbornly high.

Rice prices, after a recent increase, appear to have stabilised.

Fish prices show mixed trends. While large fish remain steady, some small fish varieties have become more expensive.

The onion market is showing a downward trend. Large garlic prices have decreased slightly, but small garlic has seen a price rise. Meanwhile, ginger and potato prices remain unchanged.

Mohammad Hasan, a vegetable seller at the Shia Mosque market, told bdnews24.com: “Green chili is selling at Tk 240 per kg. It was even higher before.

“Supply is still low, so the price is high. But it should come down soon.”

SONALI CHICKEN PRICE SOARS

In Mohammadpur’s three markets, Sonali chicken is currently being sold for Tk 310 to Tk 330 per kg, compared with Tk 280 to Tk 290 last week.

Ahmed Kamal, a private employee shopping at Town Hall market, expressed frustration over the price hike.

“They raise chicken prices whenever they want. I am now paying Tk 30 more than last week,” he said.

Broiler chicken remains unchanged at Tk 170 per kg, while Red Layer chicken is still selling at Tk 300 per kg.

Country chicken also shows no variation, staying steady at Tk 550 per kg.

Egg prices remain mostly stable.

Country chicken eggs are being sold at Tk 270 per dozen, as they were last week.

Duck eggs have increased by Tk 10 to Tk 210 per dozen, while quail eggs remain unchanged at Tk 45 per dozen.

Farm-produced red eggs are still selling at Tk 120 per dozen, and white eggs are priced Tk 10 lower.

SMALL GARLIC UP, ONION DOWN

Pakistani onions saw a price drop in all three Mohammadpur markets. They were selling at Tk 60 per kg on Friday, down from Tk 65 the week before.

Ginger prices stayed unchanged, with thick Chinese ginger at Tk 180 and thin local ginger at Tk 160 per kg.

While the price of large garlic dropped by Tk 30 per kg to Tk 240, small garlic rose by Tk 60, selling at Tk 180 per kg.

Potatoes continued to sell at Tk 25 per kg.

VEGETABLE PRICES SHOW NO LET-UP

The upward trend in vegetable prices has persisted since Eid-ul-Azha and shows no signs of easing.

Okra is still selling at Tk 50 to Tk 60 per kg. Snake gourds and ridge gourds are going for Tk 70 per kg, while pointed gourd is priced between Tk 60 and Tk 70. Wax gourd is also priced at Tk 70.

Teasle gourd is selling at Tk 40 per kg, while taro stolon is priced between Tk 90 and Tk 100.

Tomatoes have jumped to Tk 160 per kg, a sharp rise from under Tk 100 just a week ago.

Carrots are priced between Tk 70 and Tk 80, radishes at Tk 50, and cucumbers range from Tk 80 to Tk 100 per kg.

Lime prices vary by size and variety, with a set of four selling for Tk 15 to Tk 30 -- roughly the same as last week.

SMALL FISH SEE PRICE HIKE

Although there was a downward trend in prices for Mola fish two weeks ago, they have now increased again.

On Friday, Mola fish was selling at Tk 550 to Tk 600 per kg. Pabda fish prices remain mostly unchanged, selling at Tk 400 to Tk 450 per kg.

No changes were observed in the prices of large Tengra, which continued to sell at Tk 550–600 per kg.

Large Rui fish were selling for Tk 420 per kg, while smaller ones were priced at Tk 350.

Large Katla fish were priced at Tk 450 per kg

Smaller varieties of Boal fish are being sold for Tk 450 to Tk 500 per kg.

Small-sized Aair is priced between Tk 650 and Tk 750. Shing fish is going for Tk 450, while kachki is selling between Tk 500 and Tk 550 per kg.
