Yawer Sayeed, founder and managing director of AIMS of Bangladesh Limited and a pioneering figure in Bangladesh’s capital market, has died in Australia, the company has said.

A mutual fund trailblazer, Yawer passed away before dawn on Jun 13 in Gold Coast, Queensland, AIMS said in a media statement on Saturday.

He was remembered by colleagues and market participants as one of the country’s most respected financial professionals.

Alongside founding AIMS, the country’s first private-sector asset management company, Sayeed launched Bangladesh’s first private-sector mutual fund.

Under his leadership, AIMS introduced five more mutual funds, which gained recognition among investors for their performance, transparency and regulatory compliance, the statement added.

Over a career spanning nearly 40 years in Bangladesh and abroad, Sayeed played a key role in the development of the country’s capital market.

He contributed to policy and regulatory reforms through his involvement in committees and working groups of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission.

He also served as a staff consultant and performance auditor for Operation Evaluation Missions of the Asian Development Bank and coordinated the bank’s consultative group for the finance, industry and trade sectors in Bangladesh.

He provided consultancy, research and advisory services to several multilateral organisations, including the World Bank.

AIMS described his death as an “irreparable loss” to the institution he built and to Bangladesh’s financial sector.

Details of his funeral prayers will be announced after his body is brought back to Bangladesh.
