The demonstrations on Tuesday followed a comment over a baby being shot in her mother’s womb in a clash between ruling party’s factions.
Fearing violence, traders shut shops when the followers of Sikder and Shikhor came face-to-face in the afternoon.
Mohammadpur Police Station OC Sheikh Atiar Rahman told bdnews24.com police averted a major clash.
Mohammadpur Market Traders Association General Secretary Kamalesh Chandra Saha, without naming any political party, said the businessmen were in panic.
On July 23, a man was killed and a woman was shot during a clash between two factions of ruling Awami League. The baby in the woman’s womb also received bullet injuries.
On Monday, a newspaper ran a report saying Shikhor-Biren dispute was behind the Magura casualties. The report included a comment by Sikder against Shikhor and his family.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s APS-II Shikhor’s father late Asaduzzaman Khan was an MP from Magura. He was the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament in 1979.
After the newspaper carried the report, tension spread among the supporters of Sikder and Shikhor.
On Monday, Mohammadpur Upazila unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League marched and rallied against Sikder.
Sikder’s supporters started gathering at the Upazila Parishad on Tuesday morning. Shikhor’s followers also took position at hospital Intersection.
Tension gripped the area when they began marching towards each other.
Police intervened to keep the two groups at bay.
Later, Sikder’s followers organised a rally in Bus Stand area and Shikhor’s supporters at Tin Rastar Morh.
Both the groups claimed they demonstrated ‘peacefully’.
