President Md Abdul Hamid handed over the award, a certificate and Tk 100,000 in cash to each recipient at a function at the national theatre hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Dhaka on Thursday.
Syed Abdullah Khalid received the award in fine arts category, Ustad Bazlur Rahman Badal in dance, Pandit Amresh Roy Chowdhury in vocal music, Pandit Madan Gopal Das in instrumental music, Ashraful Alam in recitation, Lucky Enam in dramatics and Shahidul Alam in photography.
Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor and Shilpakala Academy Director General Liakat Ali Lucky were also present at the award-giving ceremony presided over by Cultural Affairs Secretary Ranjit Kumar Biswas.
Syed Abdullah Khalid
Sculptor of ‘Aparajeo Bangla’ installed on Dhaka University campus, Khalid was born in Sylhet on Sept 1, 1945. He did his graduation in fine arts from Dhaka University’s Institute of Fine Arts in 1969 and master’s from Chittagong University’s Institute of Fine Arts, where he joined as a teacher later.
Khalid and Prof Shafiqul Islam designed the martyrs’ monument on Chittagong University campus.
Ustad Bazlur Rahman Badal
Badal was born on Oct 18, 1923 in West Bengal, now in India. He is working as the dance trainer at Rajshahi district Shilpakala Academy.
Besides dance, Badal acted in many dramas, including ‘Sirajuddoula’, ‘Tipu Sultan’, ‘Ali Baba’, ‘Pather Sheshe’, ‘Abhijan’ and ‘Iraner Rani’.
Pandit Amresh Roy Chowdhury
Chowdhury was born in Faridpur district in 1928. A regular classical music artiste at Bangladesh Television and Rajshahi Betar, Chowdhury has established a music training centre, ‘Sangeetashram’.
He learned classical music from famed musician of the sub-continent Sudhir Lal Chakrabarty.
Pandit Madan Gopal Das
Das was born in Dhaka on Sept 7, 1939. He is working as an instrumental musician at Bangladesh Television.
He teaches playing Tabala (a kind of tabor) at Chhayanaut, Nazrul Academy, Christian Cultural Academy, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and Dhaka University’s music department.
Ashraful Alam
Alam was born in Rangpur on Feb 1, 1947. He started his career with Bangladesh Betar as a programme producer and retired from there in 2004 as a director.
His recitation inspired the freedom fighters during Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971.
Lucky Enam
Lucy Enam was born in Rangpur on Sept 14, 1952. She made her debut as a theatre artiste performing in the drama, ‘Buro Shaliker Ghare Ro’.
She has performed in around 35 stage dramas.
Shahidul Alam
Born in Dhaka on Jun 2, 1955, Alam is a writer, teacher, curator and rights activist.
He founded country’s first photo archive Drik Gallery.
Photos taken by Alam have earned acclaims both at home and abroad.
