The move aims to help the public university function smoothly after the tenure of vice-chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique ended last month, the government said in a notice on Monday.
Prior to his new assignment, he was the pro-vice chancellor of the university.
Akhtaruzzaman, 53, joined Dhaka University’s Department of Islamic History and Culture as a lecturer in 1990. He was elevated to professorship in 2004.
He did his PhD in history from Aligarh Muslim University in India. He is a Fulbright scholar, according to the Dhaka University website.
"The education minister just now informed me about the matter by phone," the teacher, hailing from Barguna's Patharghata, told bdnews24.com.

Prof Arefin Siddique of the Mass Communication and Journalism Department was the president of the association at the time. He was appointed vice-chancellor in January 2009.
His tenure was extended for four years in August 2013 through the forming of a panel of candidates by the senate.
Ahead of the end of his term, the senate formed a panel of three candidates for the post. The candidates were Arefin Siddique, Science Faculty Dean Mohammed Abdul Aziz and Treasurer Kamal Uddin.
The Appellate Division stayed all activities of the panel of VC nominees last month following a writ petition by some registered graduates against the meeting that selected the nominees. The court also ordered settlement of the case in four weeks.
