Dhaka, Jan 24 (bdnews24.com) – US-based National Democratic Institute wants peaceful polls in Bangladesh in the shortest possible time in the interest of democracy, NDI director for Asia affairs Peter M Manikas said Wednesday.
The remark came after a five-member NDI team met BNP secretary general Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan at the BNP's headquarters in Naya Paltan to discuss polls-related issues.
Manikas said they discussed various election-related issues with the BNP leaders at the meeting beginning at 11am Wednesday.
NDI Bangladesh resident director Dr Owen Lippert, senior programme manager Debora Hilly, South Asia senior programme officer Terry Hovarter and senior operations manager Saiful Karim were in the NDI delegation.
Reaz Rahman, adviser to party chief Khaleda Zia, said the NDI spelled out its plans on necessary training and voter list correction for peaceful polls.
Reaz hoped the caretaker government would take necessary steps to hold a free, fair and peaceful election within the shortest possible time.
BNP leaders MK Anwar, AHM Mofazzal Karim and Nazrul Islam Khan joined the meeting.
The NDI team earlier met Awami League president Sheikh Hasina.
