They stand accused in five charges of abduction, detention and torture, looting, arson, rape, murder and genocide in Netrokona’s Durgapur and Kalmakanda Upazilas in 1971, said Chief Coordinator of ICT investigation wing Abdul Hannan Khan.
“We have finalised the investigation report,” he told a press conference on Monday at the organisation’s Dhanmondi offices. “It will be forwarded to the prosecutors soon.”
Though five were named in the investigation report, arrested suspect Ramzan Ali passed away in hospital last September.
Three of the other suspects - Azizul Rahman, 65, Ashok Ali, 82 and Md Shahnewaz, 88 – are in prison. Khalilur Rahman, 72, is currently at large.
Islami Chhatra Sangha member Khalilur joined the Razakar forces in 1971 and later became the commander of the Chandigarh Union Al Badr, said Senior Official Sanaul Haque.
Muslim League supporters Azizur, Ashok and Shahnewaz also joined the union’s Razakar forces.
According to the investigation, the suspects are all current supporters of the Jamaat-e- Islami, the party which actively opposed Bangladesh's independence during the war.
Investigator Badrul Alam, who led the probe, heard testimonies of 71 individuals after starting the investigation in April 2015.
Charge 1
On May 10, 1971 the suspects participated in an attack conducted by three Pakistani soldiers, 20-25 Razakars, Al Badr and Peace Committee memebers at Durgapur’s Bhuliparha village in the Kullagorha Union. They attempted to rape ‘Torikenessa’ (deceased), kidnapped and killed Ayub Ali and looted the home of Innos Ali, then detained and tortured him for about a week.
Charge 2
On Sep 11, 1971, the suspects, alongside Pakistani troops, attacked the homes of freedom fighter Abdul Motin and his uncle Manju Miah in Kalmakanda’s Anandapur and the homes of freedom fighter Abdul Gofur and freedom fighter supporter Abdul Wahed at Durgapur’s Nowagaon.
They looted and set fire to the four houses and also killed 27 cows belonging to the families.
Charge 3
On Oct 26, 1971, the suspects, alongside 15-16 Pakistani troops and 50-60 Razakars, detained Ahmed Ali and his son Abdul Hamid from Durgapur’s Borhoundo village, Moslemuddin from Kalmakanda’s Anandapur, Mukhtal Hossain Talukder, Abdul Hamid Talukdar, Abdul Wahed Talukder and Abdus Sattar from Chhotokrishnapur, and Mahir Uddin Fakir from Rangshinpur and looted their homes.
Abdul Hamid and Abdus Sattar were released at the request of Phulpur Madrasa teacher Sultan Ahmed. The others were shot and killed by a firing line on the banks of the Bakla River.
Charge 4
On Oct 29, 1971, the suspects detained freedom fighter supporters Fazil Uddin, Abdul Quader and his son Abul Hossain, Chamir Uddin and his son Sharafat Ali and Momruz Ali from their homes in Chandigorh’s Noahgaon village.
They looted their homes and burned the property of Fazil Uddin and Abdul Quader.
They then shot and killed five of the detainees on the north bank of the Katakhali River. Abul Hossain managed to break free of his bonds and flee by diving into the river.
Charge 5
On Nov 17 and 18, 1971, the suspects conducted an attack on Chanigorh’s Baniaparha village. They raped Hazera Khatun at gunpoint and murdered ‘Pukurjan’ after she attempted to stop them.
They then abducted nine residents and took them to Birishiri PC Nol Memorial High School. The abductees were tortured and raped, tortured and murdered an anonymous minor girl.
One of those captured, Jamal Uddin Rabbani, managed to flee by diving into the Shomeswari River. The other eight were shot and killed and their bodies were dumped into the river.
