Dhaka, Mar 27 (BDNEWS) – The government is planning to turn the existing constable-based Bangladesh Police into 'Officer-based' force.
It also decided to increase 25 percent manpower of the police department by appointing 25,000 more policemen as soon as possible.
As part of the development project of the Bangladesh Police, the government is also considering to make the ASP level officers as the officers-in-charge of police stations instead of police inspectors.
But, the cabinet committee on law and order at a meeting Monday expressed dissatisfaction over the progress of the process in this regard, sources said.
On the other hand, the cabinet committee meeting discussed about the reform of different sections of the Police Regulation of Bengal (PRB).
The meeting sources said that the committee formed two years back to submit a report on the PRB reform Monday submitted its report in the meeting. But, the meeting did not approve it. Rather, the meeting expressed its dissatisfaction over the performance of the committee.
According to the meeting sources, the meeting asked the committee to submit a complete report on the PRB reform in the next cabinet committee meeting.
The meeting also asked to submit the detailed budged including the maintenance cost of the increased manpower.
The committee members present at the meeting said that they would submit the new financial demand report at the next meeting.
According to sources, the existing manpower in the police is 118,000. Of them, over 80,000 are constables.
Sources said the proposed organogram will consists of as many as 3,116 officers from ASP to IGP levels instead of the existing 1,247 posts in the same levels.
Expressing concern over the rise of criminal activities at different paras and mahallas, the meeting discussed the toll collection in the names of 23 top terrors.
The meeting also directed the BDR to beef up their vigilance in the bordering areas to protect bird-flu.
Presided over by LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Mannan Bhuiyan Bhuiyan, the meeting was attended, among others, by Housing and Public Works minister Mirza Abbas, Fisheries and Livestock minister Abdullah Al Noman, State Minister for Home Lutfozzaman Babar, and the Cabinet Secretary, Establishment Secretary, Home secretary and Finance Secretary.
