Dhaka, Dec 30 (bdnews24.com) – The cabinet has approved a proposal to bring the grandchildren of freedom fighters working in government and autonomous institutions under job quota.
The approval came from a cabinet meeting held on Thursday with prime minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
The meeting also endorsed the draft 'Children Act-2010' which says that individuals under the age of 18 are 'children'.
After the meeting, prime minister's press secretary Abul Kalam Azad briefed reporters at the press information department.
Kalam said 30 percent quota is allotted to the freedom-fighter's children in government, semi-government and autonomous institutions. "However, the quota cannot be fully utilised by their children. "If the quota cannot be fully utilised with freedom-fighters' children, their grandchildren will be taken into account."
A minister present at the meeting told bdnews24.com that the proposal was put forward to give advantage to freedom-fighters' brothers' and sisters' children as well, but the cabinet only approved the grandchildren.
Kalam said the 'Child-law-2010' supersedes the existing child laws.
Once passed, individuals under the age of 18 will be considered 'children.' There will be a board for child welfare and children-friendly force to ensure facilities for children. There will be an alternative system to bring delinquent children.
