Shilpi Begum, a Jubo Mohila League activist who was sent to jail in a case over the attempted murder of Dhaka University student Tahmid Mubin Ratul during the July Uprising and separated from her one-and-a-half-month-old daughter, has been released on bail.
Shilpi and her child were released from Kashimpur Central Jail shortly before noon on Wednesday. Family members were present at the time.
Shilpi’s lawyer, Farzana Yasmin Rakhi, said: “[On Tuesday] afternoon, Shilpi’s bail plea was rejected and she was sent to jail. Later in the evening, she was granted bail after we sought reconsideration.
“We could not submit the bail bond [on Tuesday]. We submitted it today, and Shilpi Begum was released from Kashimpur Jail shortly before noon.”
Shilpi’s husband, Rahim Hossain Sohag, said: “The child has become slightly ill because of the heat. Her mother was already unwell, and her condition has worsened due to the stress.”
Shilpi is involved in politics through Ward No. 26 of the Dhaka Metropolitan North unit of the Jubo Mohila League. She was arrested from the Railway Colony area of Tejkunipara on Monday evening.
On Tuesday, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Jonaid rejected her bail plea and ordered her to be sent to jail.
Her relatives said Shilpi’s child was born by C-section on Mar 4 at Dhaka’s Ad-Din Medical College Hospital. Later, Shilpi fell in the bathroom and broke her left arm. Under the circumstances, she could not hold the child properly or care for her on her own.
Shilpi broke down in tears after the court denied her bail. As she was unwell, her relatives held the child at the courthouse. When the baby cried, Shilpi breastfed her.
After bail was denied, Shilpi said: “My C-section wound still hurts. I cannot feed the baby properly. She will die.
“My baby will die. I have a problem with my arm and cannot take care of her. I will not take her with me. If I take her to jail, my baby will die.”
As news spread that the mother of a 1.5-month-old child had been sent to jail, the incident sparked widespread discussion on social media. In the evening, Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman granted Shilpi bail on humanitarian grounds.
According to the case statement, Dhaka University student Tahmid Mubin Ratul was shot in the Chankharpul area on Jul 16, 2024 during the anti-discrimination movement. His classmates took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment, where they were allegedly attacked by numerous Chhatra League leaders and activists.
The case further alleges that on Jul 23, under Shilpi’s “instructions”, 120 to 130 unidentified people, along with the accused named in the complaint, attacked the student’s home in Tejgaon. Furniture and electronic items were vandalised, causing losses of Tk 500,000, while goods worth Tk 300,000 were looted. The complaint also alleges that Shilpi and others indiscriminately beat Ratul’s father, Sohel Rana.
On Jan 25 last year, Ratul’s mother, Shahnur Khanam, filed a case with Tejgaon Police Station, naming 103 people, including former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, and accusing 120 to 130 others as unidentified suspects.
