India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has visited the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi to convey condolences over the death of former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
He was received by Riaz Hamidullah, high commissioner of Bangladesh to India on Thursday.
Rajnath signed the condolence book opened by the Bangladesh mission.
“Sincerest condolences on behalf of the Government and People of India, at the passing of Begum Khaleda Zia, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party,” he wrote in his condolence message
“Her notable contributions to strengthening India-Bangladesh ties will always be remembered.”

The defence minister later took to social media site X, writing: “Went to the High Commission of Bangladesh in New Delhi. Signed the Condolence Book expressing our profound sorrow at the passing of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.”

“Our thoughts are with her family and the people of Bangladesh,” he wrote.
Khaleda, who governed Bangladesh in three terms, died in the early hours of Tuesday while undergoing treatment at a hospital.
She was laid to rest on Wednesday beside her husband, former president Ziaur Rahman, following a funeral prayer held outside the Parliament building.
Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar arrived in Dhaka on Wednesday to pay tribute to Khaleda. During his visit, he met her son and the BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and offered condolences on behalf of the Indian government.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences over Khaleda Zia’s death, sending a letter to Tarique to convey his sympathies.
