Senior BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has urged the public not to be “misled” by varying media reports about the health of party chief Khaleda Zia, saying the former prime minister remains in “stable” condition.
Speaking to bdnews24.com on Monday, the BNP secretary general said Khaleda's treatment at Dhaka's Evercare Hospital was continuing under close medical supervision.
“Madam’s condition is stable. Her treatment is ongoing under the close observation of doctors.”
The 79-year-old former premier, who has been battling multiple long-term illnesses, including arthritis, diabetes and complications involving her kidneys, liver, lungs and eyes, was admitted to the hospital on Nov 23 after tests revealed a lung infection.
Last week, Fakhrul had described her condition as “critical”, and over the weekend some media outlets quoted BNP Vice-Chairman Ahmed Azam Khan as saying she had been placed on “ventilation”, adding to public anxiety.
The BNP Media Cell later issued a statement asking journalists and supporters to rely solely on information provided by Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, a member of the party’s standing committee and Khaleda’s personal physician. It urged everyone to refrain from spreading “unnecessary, unverified or misleading” claims about her treatment.
Zahid said any decision to take Khaleda abroad for medical care would depend on her overall physical stability and the recommendations of the medical board overseeing her treatment.
Fakhrul echoed the call for caution, saying: “Reports are being published about Madam in various media. That is fine, but no one should be confused by anything.”
He also called for party leaders, activists, and countrymen to pray for Khaleda’s speedy recovery.
“Specialist doctors are engaged in providing care for Madam around the clock. As far as I have heard from them, her treatment is ongoing. That is the update. All of you, please pray for her, so that Allah can return her to us in good health.”
