Former chief advisor Muhammad Yunus has vacated the State Guest House Jamuna after living there for nearly 18 months.
He left the residence around 3:15pm on Saturday, Sub Inspector Mizanur Rahman, who was in charge of his security, told bdnews24.com.
“We had instructions that he would leave Jamuna at 3pm. He departed around 3:15pm,” the officer said.
Ramna Division Deputy Commissioner Masud Alam also confirmed Yunus’s departure.
Before his exit, a delegation representing Tarique Rahman paid a courtesy call to the Nobel laureate, according to the Prime Minister’s Press Wing.
The delegation was led by Defence Advisor AKM Shamsul Islam and included Principal Secretary ABM Abdus Sattar and Military Secretary Maj Gen Abul Hasnat Mohammad Tariq.
Yunus moved into Jamuna on Aug 8, 2024, after taking charge of the interim government.
Although a new administration was formed following the national election on Feb 12, he had remained in the residence until now.
Prime Minister Tarique has expressed his intent to move into Jamuna once necessary renovations are complete.
Md Khalekuzzaman Chowdhury, chief engineer of the Public Works Department, told bdnews24.com that the refurbishment of the residence will take approximately one month.
The prime minister is currently operating from his Gulshan residence while commuting to the Secretariat and the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon.
Jamuna has previously housed chief advisors of caretaker governments, including Justice Habibur Rahman in 1996, Latifur Rahman in 2001, and Fakhruddin Ahmed after the political changeover in 2007.
