A Dhaka court has convicted British MP Tulip Siddiq in a corruption case related to the allotment of a 10-katha plot in Purbachal and sentenced her to two years in prison.

On Monday, Judge Rabiul Alam of the Special Judge’s Court delivered the verdict in the case, which also involved Tulip’s mother, Sheikh Rehana, who was sentenced to seven years in prison.

Tulip’s aunt, ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, was sentenced to five years along with the other defendants in the case.

Tulip resigned from her position as city minister in the United Kingdom in January amid criticism over reports that she had received a £700,000 flat in London as a “gift” from a developer allegedly linked to her family and the Awami League following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government.

Her name had previously surfaced in allegations of corruption tied to the Rooppur Nuclear Power Project.

Controversy also arose over a flat in Gulshan, which Tulip had transferred to her sister Azmina Siddiq Ruponti in 2015. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) claimed the notary used in the transfer was “fake”.

Tulip’s lawyers had earlier raised objections over an arrest warrant, stating that the ACC had promised to investigate using “authentic documents” but had failed to provide any, violating her “fundamental right to justice”.

ACC Chairman Mohammad Abdul Momen had questioned Tulip’s resignation, asking why she had stepped down if she were innocent, adding that the ACC had invited her legal team to participate in proceedings in Bangladesh.

Tulip, the daughter of Rehana and Shafique Siddique, first became a British MP in 2015 and was re-elected in 2017 and 2019.

Born in London, she spent her childhood in Bangladesh, India, and Singapore, and holds a Master’s degree in politics, policy, and government from King’s College London.

Hasina had previously been sentenced to 21 years in prison in three other cases of plot corruption in Purbachal.

Her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy and daughter Saima Wazed Putul received five-year jail terms each.

Two additional Purbachal plot cases, involving Hasina, Tulip, and other family members, are ongoing.

Tulip's brother Radwan Mujib Siddiq Bobby and sister Ruponti are each accused in one of these cases.
