Single-use plastics (SUPs) are set to be completely banned in the Bangladesh Secretariat starting from Sunday.
The government has taken the step to set an "exemplary precedent" in curbing the use of these products, which pose a serious threat to the environment and public health, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change said in a statement on Saturday.
From Sunday, security checks will be carried out at all Secretariat entry points. If polythene or other single-use plastics are found inside, their use will be prohibited. Officials said paper bags will be provided if necessary.
Furthermore, awareness boards have been installed at the entry points and in multiple locations within the Secretariat. A monitoring team is working to observe the entire initiative.
The Cabinet Division recently instructed all ministries to implement this initiative, the statement noted.
It specified that the use of SUPs must be stopped in the Secretariat and reusable materials must be ensured. SUPs such as bottles, cups, plates, and spoons can no longer be used in meetings and seminars.
Instead, emphasis has been placed on using jute, cloth, or reusable bags.
Instructions have also been given to include plastic alternatives in government procurement.
At the same time, special directives have been issued to officials and employees to stop using SUPs.
Paper or eco-friendly food packets will be provided at meetings and seminars. Alternative materials will be supplied to the Secretariat's officials and employees for office use, the release said.
It added that instructions have been given to appoint a focal person and form a monitoring committee on the matter in every ministry.
