A political government is not solely responsible for corruption as it is also the “permanent part” of the state, Prime Minister's Information Advisor Zahed Ur Rahman has said.
Addressing a press conference at the Secretariat on Tuesday, he said the employees of the republic are also to blame for corruption.
Zahed said, "The government wants all allegations of corruption, past and present, to be equally investigated."
According to Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), corruption in the service sector during Muhammad Yunus-led interim government involved more than Tk 120 billion.
The advisor was questioned about the government's measures regarding the finding.
Regarding the TIB's claim, Zahed said: "Both political leadership and administration are involved in running the government. The corruption that has emerged in the provision of services is a long-standing institutional problem.
He said it would be "unfair" to accuse the interim government advisors of being linked to the Tk 120 billion corruption.
"However, there is a culture of bribery and irregularities in institutions at the field level, which the government is working to eliminate," the advisor added.
Corruption has not "completely" stopped under the current government, which is trying to gradually curb irregularities, said Zahed.
He hopes the amount of corruption in the country will decrease in the TIB report next year.
"Corruption is a criminal offense and there is no statute of limitations. Therefore, it is possible to investigate the allegations at any time," he said responding to the allegations involving the interim administration.
If there are specific allegations against any advisor to the interim government, anyone from the Awami League regime or anyone from the current government, the Anti-Corruption Commission should investigate independently, said Zahed.
“The (current) government will not obstruct such investigations and will rather encourage the independent functioning of the commission," he added.
