Following deadly clashes between two factions of Tabligh Jamaat that rocked Biswa Ijtema, police have banned all kinds of meetings, rallies, processions, and gatherings of more than two people within a three-kilometre radius of the Tongi Ijtema ground.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police have also prohibited public entry to the Ijtema ground.
The decisions were announced in a public notice signed by Gazipur Police Commissioner Nazmul Karim Khan on Wednesday.
It said the restrictions will remain in effect from 2pm until further notice.
The notice also prohibits carrying weapons, knives, sticks, explosives, or similar items in the area. Loudspeakers or other devices that produce loud noise are not allowed.
The notice warns that violators of these restrictions will face legal consequences.
Similar restrictions have also been imposed on areas adjoining Tongi under the jurisdiction of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
In a public notice issued on Wednesday afternoon, Dhaka Metropolitan Police announced that from 2pm, all types of meetings, rallies, processions, marches, and protests are prohibited in Kamarpara, Abdullahpur, Uttara Sector-10, and adjacent areas on the southwestern side of the Turag River.
Followers of Tabligh Jamaat leaders Maulana Zubair Ahmad and Delhi-based Maulana Md Saad Kandhalvi clashed around 3am on Wednesday over control of the Bishwa Ijtema grounds on the banks of the Turag.
At least three people were killed, and scores injured, according to Gazipur Police Commissioner Md Nazmul Karim Khan.
Habib Iskander, the chief of Tongi West Police Station, said followers of Maulana Zubair were stationed at the Ijtema grounds on Tuesday. Later, followers of Maulana Saad began entering the grounds from the west bank of the Turag River via the Kamarpara Bridge and other routes.
Maulana Zubair's followers started throwing bricks and stones from within the grounds, prompting a counterattack by Maulana Saad's followers.
At one point, when Maulana Saad's followers entered the grounds, a violent clash broke out between the two groups. Upon receiving the news, police, army personnel, and other law-enforcing agencies arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.
In the afternoon, Home Advisor Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury held separate meetings with both factions of Tabligh Jamaat at the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Both sides were instructed to vacate the Ijtema grounds in Tongi.
