A youth has been killed in a clash between two groups during a mediation meeting in Brahmanbaria’s Nasirnagar Upazila, following a verbal altercation at a bag factory in Dhaka.
In the aftermath, houses in the area were vandalised and looted.
Nasirnagar Police Inspector (Investigation) Tanvir Ahmed said the incident took place on Wednesday afternoon.
Following the incident, the area has been deserted by men, fearing arrest or retaliation. Meanwhile, many families have fled the village with women and children in panic.
The dead, 40-year-old Amir Ali, was a farmer by profession.
Police and witnesses said Sujan Mia and Shakil, identified by a single name, worked in a bag factory in Dhaka. A dispute between them began with an argument.
To resolve the matter, members from both sides gathered for mediation at a house on Wednesday.

During the meeting, a heated fight led to Amir being struck by a brick.
Later, he was taken to the Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor declared him dead. Tension arose in the village when the news of Amir’s death spread in the area.
A group attacked the house of a Shakil supporter, vandalising it and stealing 12 cattle.
Following Amir’s death, at least 10 houses and shops were reportedly vandalised, prompting many to flee.
Police Inspector Tanvir Ahmed said one side carried out the vandalism, but the situation is now calm. Legal action will follow if complaints are filed.
