The government has released a new Tk 5 currency note featuring images of the “historical and archaeological architecture of Bangladesh”.
The note, carrying the signature of Finance Secretary Md Khairuzzaman Mozumder, is set to enter circulation on Tuesday.
According to the Financial Institutions Division of the finance ministry, the notes are being issued initially through the Bangladesh Bank’s Motijheel office and will later be available at other branches.
Following the fall of the Awami League government in 2024, the then interim administration decided to remove the portrait of independence architect Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from all currency, leading to this redesign.
Under a government decision, Bangladesh Bank began printing currency notes with a new design theme titled “Historical and Archaeological Architecture of Bangladesh”.
Newly designed Tk 1,000, Tk 500, Tk 100, Tk 50, Tk 20 and Tk 10 notes have already entered the market with the signature of the Bangladesh Bank Governor Mostaqur Rahman.
As Tk 1, Tk 2 and Tk 5 notes are government-issued currency in Bangladesh, they carry the finance secretary’s signature instead of the governor’s.
The new Tk 5 note is the first government-issued note to be released under the redesigned series.
Security Features
The new light-pink note measures 117mm by 60mm.
Its front side showcases the Tara Mosque in Dhaka on the left, with the national flower, the water lily, set against a background of leaves in the centre.
The reverse side features a depiction of 2024 July Uprising graffiti.
Security features include a watermark of a Royal Bengal Tiger's face, an electrotype watermark of the numeral “5”, and the government monogram.
A 2-mm wide security thread is embedded within the paper, visible from both sides when held against the light.
In addition, the word “BANGLADESH” is printed horizontally in micropoints within the bluish pattern at the bottom front.
The ministry confirmed that all existing banknotes and coins currently in circulation will remain legal tender alongside the new version.
