The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has decided to file a case against former member of parliament for Chapainawabganj-2, Md Ziaur Rahman, on charges of possessing illicit wealth.
His wife Kashmeri Begum has also been instructed to submit a statement of her assets.
On Monday, ACC Director General Akhtar Hossain said: “As a public servant, he allegedly abused his power and accumulated assets worth Tk 10.83 million, which is inconsistent with his known sources of income.
“There have also been suspicious transactions worth Tk 100.27 million across five bank accounts operated in his name and under his organisation.”
Based on these allegations, the commission has decided to file a case against him under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, Sections 4(2) and 4(3) of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012, and Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947.
Akhtar said that assets amounting to Tk 5.25 million have been identified under Kashmeri’s name. As there is reason to believe she may possess additional undisclosed assets under her name or aliases, she has been instructed to submit a full asset declaration.
Ziaur was elected as a member of parliament from Chapainawabganj-2 as an Awami League candidate in the ninth national elections in 2009. He was again elected in a by-election in 2023 and later won the seat again in the 12th national elections in 2024.
