Social Welfare Advisor Sharmeen S Murshid has warned that “excessive violence” ahead of general election could derail the entire process.
Speaking at a ceremony honouring outstanding students in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, on Saturday afternoon, Sharmeen called for joint efforts to maintain stability in the lead-up to polls.
She said to prevent election-day disruptions, police, administration, and citizens must ensure their local areas remain peaceful.
“It is our responsibility as well as yours to keep your area calm and free from violence,” she added.
Noting that all political parties are now preparing for the election, she said: “If we all come together to keep the electoral field peaceful, our work will become much easier. I have observed elections for many years, that is why I am saying these things.”
Recalling the July Uprising, the advisor said: “Our young people, in their thousands and even millions, have destroyed a highly oppressive system, a state apparatus. Society is riddled with injustice and corruption.
“If we eliminate one layer, remember there are three more layers for future leaders to tackle. This must be done. If we fail, the sacrifices of these young people will be in vain.”
She also highlighted that the interim government is working specifically for women and children in the “new” Bangladesh.
