Authorities in Ishwardi have ejected a government officer from his residence after eight puppies -- born barely a week ago -- were recovered drowned from a pond, prompting officials to condemn the incident as “inhuman and cruel”.
Upazila administrator (UNO) Md Moniruzzaman said on Tuesday that Hasnur Rahman Nayan, an officer at the Ishwardi Small Farmers Development Foundation, was asked to leave the government residence within a day as “punishment for an act of extreme cruelty”.
On Saturday, locals found the puppies stuffed in a sack floating in a pond beside the Upazila Parishad auditorium around 11:30am, Ishwardi Police chief ASM Abdur Noor said.
Hasnur later admitted he had removed the puppies from his courtyard. “My wife asked me to remove them, fearing for the children’s safety. I didn’t think they would die. I’m ashamed and saddened,” he said.
According to locals, a stray dog had given birth to the puppies in the courtyard of the official’s residence.
On Saturday morning, the mother dog was seen running around the compound and barking frantically.
Responding to the commotion, locals searched the pond and discovered the sack with the dead puppies inside.
After examining the scene, police and locals concluded that the puppies had been thrown into the pond.
The bodies were later buried, with the mother dog remaining beside the spot, wailing.
He added that the livestock department had been instructed to treat and care for the mother dog.
