A Rajshahi court has granted police five days to interrogate Limon Mia in custody over the “murder” of a judge’s son as prime suspect.
On Saturday at around 2:30pm, Limon was produced before the court, where the investigation officer requested a seven-day remand.
Following the hearing, Metropolitan Magistrate Mamunur Rashid granted five days for questioning.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner Gaziur Rahman said, “After the order, the suspect has been taken to Rajpara Police Station. Investigators will seek to determine why and how the killing occurred and whether others were involved.”
The incident occurred on Thursday when an assailant broke into the rented residence of Rajshahi Metropolitan District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Abdur Rahman.
The attacker stabbed the judge’s 12-year-old son, Tawsif Rahman, fatally. The judge’s wife, Tasmin Nahar Lucy, was also seriously injured in the attack.
Following the assault, Judge Rahman filed a murder case on Friday, naming 34-year-old Limon as the sole accused.
The court issued a notice to Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abu Sufian after the accused was allowed to speak to the media while in police custody.
State counsel Ali Ashraf Masum said, “On Saturday, Metropolitan Magistrate Mamunur Rashid issued the notice instructing Police Commissioner Mohammad Sufian to appear in court in person by Nov 19 to explain the matter. The hearing of the case is scheduled for that date.”
According to the notice, on Nov 13, Limon entered the judge’s rented residence, fatally stabbing Tawsif and injuring Lucy with the intent to kill. Limon was immediately arrested at the scene and admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Masum added, “Later, media reports showed Limon making statements while in police custody, attributing blame to the victims. This violates Supreme Court directives, including Ayesha Siddika Minni v. State 39 BLD 470.”
ADCP Gaziur said, “The court letter had not reached RMPC headquarters by the afternoon. We will respond in accordance with any instructions once received.”
