Kushtia-3 (Sadar) MP and Islamic speaker Mufti Amir Hamza has been granted anticipatory bail by the High Court after an arrest warrant was issued against him in a defamation case.
A bench of Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher made the decision on Monday.
Senior lawyer Mohammad Shishir Manir represented Hamza at the hearing, accompanied by Advocate Saddam Hossain.
Deputy Attorney General Md Ashikuzzaman Nazrul and Assistant Attorney General Md Al Amin represented the state.
Nazrul told bdnews24.com that the court had granted anticipatory bail to Hamza in the defamation case for eight weeks or until the submission of the police report, whichever came first.
Hamza appeared in person at the High Court in the morning and petitioned for bail.
According to the case record, on Mar 26, Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood gave a speech honouring the 1971 Liberation War and the bravery of freedom fighters.
Hamza is accused of making defamatory comments about him during a discussion before the Friday prayer sermon at the Hatsh Haripur Baro Jame Mosque in Kushtia Sadar Upazila.
On Apr 2, the defamation case was filed in Sirajganj by Advocate Humayun Kabir, additional public prosecutor of the Judges’ Court and general secretary of the district’s bar association.
Kabir accused Hamza of calling Iqbal, also a senior BNP leader, an “atheist” and “Islamophobic” in a viral speech.
Hamza was summoned to appear in court. As he did not appear on the scheduled date, the judge ordered an arrest warrant against him on Apr 21.
