Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has issued a stern warning against those opposing the government's public-interest initiatives, claiming the "ghost of autocracy" is gradually possessing the opposition.
Addressing a rally at the Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University campus in Tangail’s Santosh, the premier urged the nation to remain vigilant against attempts to create anarchy.
The prime minister took a swipe at the Opposition’s conduct in parliament, questioning the demands of those who commanded significantly less public support at the poll.
He reaffirmed his administration's dedication to the "July Charter".
"When Muhammad Yunus called a meeting at the South Plaza of the parliament, the BNP was the first to sign the July Charter," Tarique said.
"I want to state clearly before you and the media: we will implement every letter, every word, and every line of that charter."
He criticised the current opposition for their initial hesitation and its ally for only signing the charter after the elections.
"If they care so much about the July movement, why didn't they sign it at the very beginning?" he questioned.
The prime minister declared that the BNP, with the support of the people, would resist anyone attempting to obstruct government initiatives such as the canal-digging project, Family Card and Farmer Card, and programmes to develop professional athletes.
"We must stay alert because the ghost of autocracy is affecting them again. They want to create chaos in the country once more," he added.
Referring to the recent polls in Sherpur-3 and the Bogura-6 by-election, the premier said the elections were largely peaceful, with only minor incidents reported.
"Where is the situation heating up? It's at Baitul Mukarram. It is certainly not unknown to you who is trying to muddy the waters," the PM remarked.
Earlier in the day, Tarique offered prayers at the grave of Mawlana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani.
