The Anti-Corruption Commission is going to accuse 26 people from five recruiting agencies over allegations of embezzlement and money laundering through syndication while sending workers to Malaysia.

On Thursday, ACC Director General Md Akhtar Hossain said the charges will cover embezzlement and money laundering involving Tk 3.14 billion.

He added that the agencies reportedly collected five times the government-approved fee of Tk 78,990 from 18,767 workers.

The ACC had previously filed similar cases on November 6 and 12 against 16 people, while a case against 13 recruiting agencies was lodged on Sept 14.

One of the cases involves GMG Trading (Pvt) Ltd, accusing the chairman and five others of collecting Tk 470 million in excess from 2,830 workers.

Another case will be filed against GMG Trading Associates, accusing its chairman, directors and five others -- a total of seven people -- of taking Tk 540 million in excess from 3,239 workers.

A third case targets QK Quick Express Ltd, where seven people, including the chairman and managing director, are set to face charges of taking Tk 710 million in excess from 4,275 workers.

A case is being started against three officials of MEF Global Bangladesh over allegations of overcharging Tk 760 million from 4,566 workers.

The fifth case will be lodged against three officials of Dhamasy Corporation Ltd over taking Tk 64 million in excess from 3,857 workers.

Malaysia repeatedly suspended recruitment from Bangladesh over allegations of corruption.

The Bangladesh government fixed the maximum migration cost for a worker’s visa to Malaysia at Tk 78,540, according to an office order issued by the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment in 2022.

Only 10 recruiting agencies used to send workers to Malaysia until 2016 under an agreement signed between Bangladesh and Malaysia. An agreement signed in 2021 raised the number of agencies to 100. But syndication persisted, with a maximum of 25 recruiting agencies controlling the entire business.
