The “programmes commemorating the anniversary of the July Uprising" have been put on hold for three days in response to the casualties from the Bangladesh Air Force fighter jet crash that left at least 20 dead and over 150 injured.
The Chief Advisor’s Office announced the decision in a statement on Monday.
A series of events have been taking place across Bangladesh since Jul 1 to mark the anniversary of the Awami League government’s fall in the wake of the student-led mass uprising.
The interim government, however, postponed those programmes following the fatal crash. It also declared Tuesday as a day of state mourning over the casualties, the statement read.
On Monday, a Bangladesh Air Force fighter jet crashed inside Milestone School and College in Dhaka’s Diabari, with most of the casualties suffering burns.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the Air Force’s F-7 BGI aircraft crashed 12 minutes after taking off on Monday noon.
The aircraft burst into flames on impact, sending thick black smoke billowing into the air. Nine units of the Fire Service rushed to the scene.
