The bodies of four Bangladeshi expatriate brothers who were recovered from a car in the Persian Gulf country of Oman have reached the family’s village home in Chattogram’s Rangunia Upazila.
Their bodies arrived at Bandarraja Para in Ward No. 5 of Lalanagar Union on Wednesday morning.
The four deceased brothers are Rashedul Islam, Shahedul Islam, Md Siraj and Md Shahid, who hailed from the area.
Their bodies arrived at Dhaka's Shahjalal International Airport on Tuesday night.
On Wednesday morning, the bodies of the four brothers were taken to their ancestral village in a freezer ambulance. Their Namaz-E-Janaza, or funeral prayer, will be held at the Lalanagar High School grounds in Rangunia at around 11am.
Four graves have been dug side by side in the graveyard adjacent to the Jame Mosque in Bandarraja Para for their burial.
Rangunia Upazila executive officer (UNO) Md Nazmul Hasan told bdnews24.com that the bodies of the four brothers had reached their home in the morning and all preparations for the funeral and burial have been completed.
"The funeral will be held at the Lalanagar High School grounds. Police and village police personnel are there. We have left for the funeral grounds."
According to government regulations, the families of the deceased expatriates will receive compensation of Tk 300,000 for each of the dead, Nazmul said.
"We are trying to send this money to their families as soon as possible."
A heartbreaking scene unfolded when the bodies arrived at the family home. Friends, relatives, neighbours, and even people from distant villages had come to see them.
A fifth brother, Mohammad Enam, lives with his mother at the Lalanagar house. The two older brothers, Rashedul and Shahedul, were married and their families lived in the house in Rangunia. Shahedul was married only seven months ago and then left for Oman.
Their youngest brother Enam said that four of the five brothers had been in Oman for a long time. Siraj and Shahid were single and were supposed to return home on May 15.
“My four brothers had gone out together to shop in preparation for their return to the country. They died in the car on the way back from shopping,” he said.
Enam’s brothers built a two-storey house in the Bandarraja neighbourhood of Lalanagar two years ago. Enam, his mother and other family members live in that house. Now the brothers have returned to that house as bodies.
Bangladeshis living in Oman said that the four brothers left for Muladdah from the Barka area of Oman last Wednesday evening. After 8pm, one of the brothers sent a voice message to a relative about his illness. He sent his location and said that they were not in any condition to get out of the car.
Later, locals informed the police after seeing four people lying unconscious inside a car parked in front of a clinic. The police reached the spot, opened the car door, and recovered their bodies.
The Times of Oman, quoting Mohammad Yasin Chowdhury, president of the Chattogram Association in Oman, said that the four deceased were between the ages of 25 and 35. One of them lived in Nizwa, another in Suwaiq, and the other two in Muladdah.
In a statement, the police said the deaths were caused by carbon monoxide inhalation from the vehicle’s exhaust while the car remained switched on, reports the Times of Oman.
