Officials who have been protesting at the Secretariat since Eid have paused their demonstrations for a day in “hopes of receiving good news”.
Badiul Kabir, co-chairman of the Secretariat Officers-Employees Unity Forum, made the announcement after a two-hour work stoppage programme at the library of the Ministry of Public Administration on Monday.
The employees have been holding various programmes, including processions, blockades, and protests since Jun 15 after the Eid holiday to demand the repeal of the Government Service (Amendment) Ordinance.
During this time, a review committee formed by the Advisory Council indicated that it would recommend changes to the ordinance, but the movement did not stop. Power and Energy Advisor Fouzul Kabir Khan and Law Advisor Asif Nazrul are on the review committee.
Fifty leaders and activists of the Employees Union gathered at the library at 11am on Monday to take part in the programme. After two hours of speeches, discussions, and review, they made an announcement and left for prayers.
Employees Union leader Badiul said, "In response to our call, the ministries are also conducting work stoppages. I saw it when I went around. Tomorrow, we will meet with employee leaders of various government departments in Dhaka and hold a public meeting.
"You should also take a break from the ongoing programme like yesterday and hold a public meeting. We need some rest to start a larger movement."
Earlier, another co-chairman, Nurul Islam, said: "You all saw what the people did yesterday to arrest a former government bureaucrat. If you work, everyone will have to suffer the consequences of that work. Keeping that in mind, withdraw the ordinance now."
Badiul said, "It's not that the government is not listening to us at all. We share some issues with everyone, some issues we don't share for strategic reasons. For example, we had an emergency meeting with an important advisor today as well. We hope that it will result in some good news."
