Dhaka, July 16 (bdnews24.com) – Bulbul Ahmed, the famed 'Devdas' star, was laid to rest at Azimpur graveyard on Friday afternoon.
People from across broad social spectrum crowded to pay their final respects to the television and media icon at each of the three namaz-e-janazas (funeral prayers) held at his Gulshan Niketan residence, Bangladesh Television complex at Rampura, and the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (FDC) premises.
Earlier his body was taken from Square Hospital's mortuary to his Niketan residence in an ambulance.
The first janaza was held at Gulshan Azad Mosque after Juma prayers.
Ahmed was laid to rest beside his parents' graves at Azimpur graveyard around 3:30 pm, following all three namaz-e-janazas.
Bulbul Ahmed breathed his last at around 11:30pm on Wednesday at the Square Hospital, where he was taken from his Niketan residence as he was feeling sick. Ahmed was 70 years old.
Ahmed's son and daughter, who live abroad, returned to the country on Friday morning.
Ahmed had been suffering from cardiac diseases, high blood pressure and diabetes for a long time.
The celebrated actor leaves behind his wife Daisy Ahmed, two daughters Aindrila and Tilottama, son Shubha, and a huge crowd of fans.
Ahmed shot to fame in the 1970s and 1980s playing lead roles in hit films like 'Suryakanya', 'Seemana Periye' and 'Mahanayak'.
His status was alleviated from a famed actor to a film icon for his performance in the lead role in the hit movie rendition of Saratchandra Chattapaddhay's novel 'Devdas,' which was directed by Chashi Nazrul Islam.
Ahmed stood strong throughout his career adding four National Movie Awards to his name. At the same time, he stepped out of his actor's identity and directed four films.
Apart from big screen performances, Bulbul Ahmed also contributed to television through his acting, including his appearance in the famous serial 'Ei Shob Dinratri' - which further heightened his popularity.
Bulbul Ahmed also appeared in several advertisements.
