Prof MA Faiz has resigned as the president of an experts panel formed to reform the country’s health sector.
He sent his resignation letter to the health secretary on Friday afternoon.
On Saturday morning, Faiz told bdnews24.com that he resigned from the position due to personal reasons.
“It’s not possible for me to carry out the duty for personal reasons. That’s why I resigned.”
A massive reshuffle has been made in the administration by the interim government formed after the resignation of the Sheikh Hasina government in the face of an intense civil uprising. The change appeared in various posts, including the director general of the Directorate General of Health Services, or DGHS.
On Aug 3, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare formed a panel consisting of experts to make necessary reforms to the healthcare system, quality improvement of medical services and strengthen the health system structure.
Former DGHS director Faiz was made president of the 12-strong panel.
The panel consists of 12 members with Prof Dr Abdullah Shafi Majumdar, former director of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, or NICD, as member secretary.
The remaining members are – Prof AK Azad Khan, president of the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh, or BADAS; Md Sayedur Rahman, vice-chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, or BSMMU; public health expert Prof Mahmudur Rahman, Dr Ferdousi Begum, a senior gynaecologist and obstetrician; Dr Feroze Quader, former professor of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital.
The panel also includes Prof Dr Sania Tahmina, former additional director general of DGHS; Dr Shakil Ahmad, paediatric department professor at Dhaka Community Medical College Hospital; Prof Dr Fazlur Rahman, CEO of Injury Prevention and Research Centre; Prof Dr MA Jalil Chowdhury, former head of medicine department at BSMMU, Dr Sarkar Mahbub Ahmad Shamim, professor at MH Samorita Hospital and Medical College.
The experts' panel will formulate policies for necessary reforms to the country's existing health system. Along with the recognition of the global standards in medical education at all levels and advising on the modernisation of higher education, the panel will reform and implement the existing health system to ensure quality health care in urban, rural and remote areas, the Aug 3 notification read.
