A clash has broken out between activists of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami in Chauddagram Upazila of Cumilla, leaving at least seven people, including a woman, injured.
Chauddagram Police chief Abu Mahmud Kawser Hossain said the violence occurred around 2:30pm in Hatbair village of Jagannathdighi Union.
Police and Army personnel later went to the scene and brought the situation under control.
BNP and Jamaat activists have since traded blame over the violence.
The injured were named as Jamaat leaders Rabiul Hossain Rocky, Zakaria Russel, Kazi Russel and Rifat Sani, along with Chauddagram Upazila BNP Vice-President Soleman Chowdhury.
Details of the other casualties could not be confirmed immediately.
The wounded were taken to the Chauddagram Upazila Health Complex and other hospitals in the district after locals rushed them for treatment. They had been returning home after attending a Jamaat election rally.
Police and witnesses said Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman had addressed the rally at the Chauddagram Pilot High School grounds at noon. After the event, an argument broke out between Jamaat supporters and local BNP activists, which escalated into a clash, according to police.
“The situation is currently peaceful,” Officer Kawser said.
