A four-member Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha delivered its verdict on Tuesday over Mujahid’s appeal against the death sentence awarded to him by the war crimes tribunal.

In an instant reaction, the attorney general told the media that the Supreme Court’s verdict ordered death to the Jamaat-e-Islami leader for planning and execution of the killings of intellectuals.

“Everyone in Bangladesh will be pleased over this verdict.

“There’s no bigger crime than to eliminate the nation’s intellectuals. I do not find any difference between the cruelties of Hitler and them (Al-Badr),” said Alam.

Al-Badr was the militia raised by Pakistan to crush the Bengali struggle for independence in 1971.

Tuesday’s verdict, acquitted the 67-year old former Al-Badr commander from the first charge, in which the tribunal had given the death penalty. It also commuted the sentence for the seventh charge to life in prison.

The Appellate Division upheld the death sentence awarded for the sixth charge related to the murder of the intellectuals.

Mujahid is the fourth war crimes convict whose case has been resolved by the top court after the trials were started in 2010.
