Members of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) election management committee have assured the Election Commission (EC) that party activists will refrain from any actions that could hinder the electoral process.
Nazrul Islam Khan, the party’s Standing Committee member and chairman of the election management committee, said: "We hope that no leaders or activists of our party will do anything to obstruct a fair election."
A three-member delegation led by Nazrul met the chief election commissioner and other commission members on Tuesday, one day before the polls.
Following the hour-long meeting, journalists asked the delegation whether they believed the election might face turmoil.
In response, Nazrul said: "It does not appear that the election will be obstructed or disrupted, though there is still one day remaining.
“We do not know what will happen, but we hope the situation will not deteriorate."
He added, "All those currently participating in the election have been involved in the struggle to restore democracy.
“Those who were against it are not in the race. Why would our conduct be such that it could affect the election?"
He noted that the environment during the campaigning phase led him to believe the election would be "free, fair, and impartial".
The BNP leader expressed confidence that BNP candidates would emerge victorious "in great numbers and by a vast margin”.
