A drone strike on a UN peacekeeping base in Sudan on Saturday claimed the life of Md Shobuj Mia, a Bangladeshi peacekeeper. His wife spoke with him briefly that afternoon, unaware she would receive the devastating news only hours later.
The news cast a shadow of grief over his village, Choto Bhagabanpur in Mahdipur Union, where relatives and neighbours mourned his death on Sunday.
Shobuj, the son of the late Habibur Rahman and Sokina Begum, joined the UN mission on Nov 7, serving as a civilian laundry worker with the Bangladesh Army.
His mother and wife, Nupur Akter, fainted multiple times upon hearing of his death.
Weeping, Nupur said: “We spoke for a few minutes on Saturday afternoon. By midnight, I received the news that he was gone.”
Sokina lamented, “He was our only treasure. He left for Sudan last month. Who will look after us now? We want his body brought home; only then will his soul find peace.”
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) identified the other Bangladeshi peacekeepers who died as Corporal Md Masud Rana (Natore); soldiers Md Mominul Islam (Kurigram) and Shanti Mondal (Kurigram); Shamim Reza (Rajbari); and waiter Mohammad Jahangir Alam (Kishoreganj).
Eight others were injured, including Lt Col Khondakar Khalekuzzaman (Kushtia), Sergeant Md Mostakim Hossain (Dinajpur), Corporal Afroza Parvin Iti (Dhaka), Lance Corporal Mohibul Islam (Barguna), soldiers Md Mezbaul Kabir (Kurigram), Mosa Umme Hani Akter (Rangpur), Chumki Akter (Manikganj) and Md Manajir Ahsan (Noakhali).
Soldier Mezbaul, in serious condition, underwent surgery.
Shobuj, who had lost his father at age two, grew up in poverty and joined the Army over 11 years ago as a civilian worker, later promoted to laundry staff. Three months before deployment, he returned home on leave before resuming duties. Married to Nupur from Natore on Mar 7, 2023, Shobuj lived with his mother and wife; the couple had no children. He was the family’s sole earner.
The attack occurred on Saturday at the UN peacekeeping mission base. Shobuj and his colleagues were performing routine duties when the drone strike targeted them, killing six and injuring eight, ISPR said.
The local community has described Shobuj as a “polite and hardworking” young man whose death has left his family destitute.
Palashbari Upazila administrator (UNO) Sheikh Jaber Ahmed said the authorities are following up on the incident and would provide all necessary government support to the bereaved family.
