The authorities of Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal have suspended two nurses after as many patients died soon after being “mistakenly administered” injections before their operations.
Brig Gen AKM Moshiul Munir, the hospital director, said the two patients died at the female ward of the ENT (ear, nose and throat) Department of the hospital on Sunday morning.
The dead are Helena Begum, 48, and Shefali Begum, 60.
A three-member inquiry committee has been formed, the hospital director said.
Hospital authorities said Helena Begum had been admitted for thyroid disease on Feb 23, while Shefali Begum, suffering from a tumour in her mouth, was hospitalised on Mar 8.
Helena’s son, identified only as Ibrahim, said his mother died shortly after receiving injections. He added that he did not intend to file a case, seeking only to avoid “harassment”.
Khadiza Begum, daughter of Shefali, said: “My mother fell ill immediately after a nurse administered several injections in the morning. I informed the nurses, but they took no action whatsoever.”
Khadija Begum, a nurse at the hospital, acknowledged the lapse: “The deaths of two patients in the same ward represent clear negligence. We fully support the actions taken by our hospital director and will provide complete cooperation.”
Brig Gen Munir highlighted the carelessness, noting that the health directorate had been informed to initiate departmental action.
He added: “Patient relatives are free to file a case if they wish, and the hospital will fully support them in doing so.”
