Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has met with the non-resident ambassador of Finland to Bangladesh Kimmo Lähdevirta at his office.
The meeting took place on Sunday, according to the chief advisor’s press wing.
Lähdevirta said more Finnish traders are interested in investing in Bangladesh.
The meeting included discussions on issues such as the student-led mass movement, the interim government’s reform initiatives, trade, investment, and regional geopolitical issues.
The Finnish ambassador expressed his government’s full support to the Yunus-led interim government as well as his intention to contribute to Bangladesh’s reforms.
The Finnish government will donate 1 million euros for the Rohingya in Bangladesh and provide another 1 million euros channeled through the civil society.
Yunus briefed the ambassador about the mass student movement, the functions of the reform commissions and the people’s expectations from his government.
Bangladesh’s economy was in a bad state since the fascist government left the country, but swift and robust reform measures have already helped stabilise the situation, Yunus said.
The reserves are increasing and the government has started clearing international payment dues without using foreign currency reserves, he added.
He also mentioned that he has taken steps to revive the SAARC to enhance regional cooperation.
More Finnish traders are keen on investing in Bangladesh and they have called for fast-tracking the Foreign Direct Investment or FDI process through the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority or BIDA.
A Finnish plastic recycling company in Cox’s Bazar has expressed interest to transform single-use plastic into plastic sheets that can be used in Rohingya camps and sheltering centres, according to the Finnish ambassador.
Finland is interested in recruiting Bangladeshi students and skilled workers as well as enhancing expertise in fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and quantum computing, according to the ambassador.
The chief advisor assured the Finnish ambassador of the maximum cooperation from Bangladesh government during his stint in Dhaka.
