Law Advisor Asif Nazrul has assured that the suspects involved in the public killing of a scrap dealer outside Mitford Hospital will be tried in a speedy trial tribunal.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, Nazrul described the murder as "barbaric" and said the government is "determined" to ensure swift justice.
On Wednesday, Md Sohag, also known as Lal Chand, a trader of scrap and old wires, was beaten to death with a concrete boulder near Gate No. 3 of Mitford Hospital. His head and body were bludgeoned in plain view.
A video of the incident went viral on social media, sparking outrage and condemnation across the country.
According to police and locals, those seen participating in the killing, as well as those suspected to be behind it, were all known to the victim. Several of them were once business associates of Sohag. People familiar with them said they could never have imagined such a horrific killing arising from a business dispute.
Police have arrested two suspects, Mahmudul Hasan Mohin and Tarek Rahman Robin, who have been remanded for questioning by a court. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has detained two others over the incident.
In the wake of the incident, the BNP expelled five members of its affiliated organisations Jubo Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal, and Chhatra Dal for their alleged involvement in the killing.
On Friday, students across the country, including Dhaka, held protest marches at educational institutions, demanding justice for Sohag and an end to extortion. Several political parties also issued separate statements expressing outrage.
Against this backdrop, Nazrul wrote in his Facebook post: "Arrangements will be made to ensure exemplary punishment through swift trial of this barbaric murder. The case will be transferred to a speedy trial tribunal under Section 10 of the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act, 2002, and proceedings will begin as soon as possible."
"The government is committed to ensuring swift justice in the Mitford murder case. Five suspects have already been arrested. Police have launched a high-priority investigation."
Of the 19 accused in the case, two are central and metropolitan leaders of Jubo Dal, the BNP's youth affiliate. The group announced their expulsion in a statement on Friday.
Another accused, Kalu, a member of Swechchhasebak Dal, has been expelled for life, according to a statement from the organisation.
Apu Das, member secretary of Chhatra Dal’s Chawkbazar unit, has also been expelled for life after being implicated in the murder.
"Preliminary findings suggest that the incident stemmed from a business dispute and prior enmity. The investigation is ongoing, and efforts to arrest the remaining suspects continue," police said in a statement.
