The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has requested an extension of the registration period for postal voting to benefit overseas Bangladeshis.

On Tuesday, a delegation met Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at the Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka’s Agargaon to make the appeal.

Registration for postal voting began on Nov 19 via the “Postal Vote BD” app, divided across eight regions with separate deadlines.

The party called for an extension of these deadlines.

After the meeting, BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said: “In countries with a large number of overseas Bangladeshis, many live in remote areas where registration is difficult.

“We have requested an extension of the registration period to allow the maximum number of Bangladeshis to participate.”

He added that the Election Commission (EC) had “assured” them that extra time would be granted to those who miss the main registration window.

Nazrul said the move is a positive step forward, noting that many overseas Bangladeshis lack NIDs, as most have been unable to obtain them and new NIDs are not issued in all countries.

“Therefore, we have proposed that the Bangladeshi passport also be accepted as identification for inclusion in the voter list,” he added.

The leader also said the BNP offered to cooperate with the EC. “We have pledged our support to ensure a free and fair election. The party is also taking initiatives to encourage overseas Bangladeshis to register.

“Our acting chairman has instructed that participation of expatriates is vital for establishing democracy in the country,” he added.
