Assailants have hacked a journalist to death, slitting his throat, while another group attacked a reporter with bricks and stones in Gazipur.
Bason Police Station chief (OC) Shahin Khan said the killing took place at the town’s Chandana intersection around 7:45pm on Thursday.
The dead, Md Asaduzzaman Tuhin, 38, was working as the Gazipur correspondent of the Bangla-language daily Dainik Protidiner Kagoj.
A local businessman, who wished to remain unnamed, said: “Around 8:15pm, Tuhin was sitting in a tea shop outside the Mosque Market, when suddenly some people surrounded him and hacked him with sharp weapons and slit his throat before fleeing. He died on the spot.”
Police later recovered the body and sent it to the morgue, said OC Shahin

Asked about the motive behind the murder, Gazipur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Rabiul Islam told bdnews24.com that the incident stemmed from a clash near the scene.
He said a man had assaulted a woman nearby, after which a group of people attacked the man with a machete.
“Tuhin was filming that incident,” Rabiul said. “The attackers had warned him not to record, but he ignored them. Later, when he sat at a tea stall, they returned and attacked him.”
Locals initially claimed that Tuhin had gone live on Facebook about extortion before the attack.
No such live video, however, was found on his Facebook page.
The last post on his Facebook account, uploaded around 8pm, featured a video captioned: “Scenes of people crossing the road however they wish, Gazipur Chowrasta.”
A JOURNALIST BEATEN UP
Another journalist was attacked with bricks and stones by a “mob” in Gazipur for allegedly protesting extortion. Police have arrested one person in connection with the incident.
Sadar Metro Police Station chief Mehedi Hasan said the incident took place in the city's Sahapara on Thursday.
The journalist, Anwar Hossain Sourav, 32, works for the Bangla Daily named Bangladesher Alo.
He was rescued in a critical condition by police and admitted to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital.
A video of the journalist being publicly beaten has gone viral on social media, sparking widespread discussion and criticism. Many have also questioned the role of police in the incident.

In the video, several people are seen gathering, throwing Sourav to the ground, and beating him. A police car is visible nearby, and one officer attempts to stop the attackers.
However, the assault continues beyond police’s attempts to stop them, and Sourav is eventually dragged away.
One of Sourav’s colleagues said, “Some people, angry at him for protesting against illegal extortion from the sidewalks in the city’s Railgate and Sahapara areas, severely beat him up. They smashed multiple parts of his body, including his legs, with bricks.
“Police were nearby during the attack, but initially did not come forward to rescue him.”
Mehedi said, “The mother of the victim has filed a case in this incident, and the investigation is ongoing. An accused named Ezhar has already been arrested.”
