Court grants CID five days to question MyTV chairman Nasir Uddin

He is implicated in a murder case linked to the July Uprising

A Dhaka court has placed MyTV chairman Nasir Uddin Sathi on a five-day remand for questioning by the Central Investigation Department in a case over the murder of Asadul Haque Babu during the July Uprising at Jatrabari.

CID investigator Inspector Khan Md Erfan had sought seven days’ custody, but after the hearing on Monday, Metropolitan Magistrate Ziauddin Ahmed granted five, according to prosecution police SI Sharifuzzaman.

Investigators allege that Nasir, in his capacity as chairman and managing director of MyTV, spread “provocative statements and broadcasts” during the July Uprising, siding with the then Awami League government against protestors.

According to the CID, his actions encouraged ruling party activists and security forces to open fire indiscriminately during a demonstration in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area on Aug 5, 2024, killing protester Babu.

Babu’s father later filed a murder case naming 25 people, including deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Nasir was listed as the 22nd suspect, while his son Tawhid Afridi was named as the 11th.

The CID said his remand is necessary to “uncover the truth, identify unknown perpetrators, and resolve outstanding questions in the case”.
