The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) of the Bangladesh Water Development Board has warned that low-lying areas in 12 districts across the country may see flooding due to an increase in rainfall.
The low-lying areas of Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Kurigram districts are likely to experience flooding while the low-lying areas of the Rajbari, Faridpur, Pabna, Manikganj, Shariatpur, Madaripur, Munshiganj and Dhaka districts are likely to experience temporary flooding.
A notice issued by the FFWC on the rainfall and river situation on Wednesday, said that the water of the Teesta River is flowing 5cm above the danger level at the Dalia point.
A low-pressure system has formed in the north-west and west-central Bay of Bengal and its adjacent areas. Over the past 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rainfall has been observed in the Rangpur and Mymensingh divisions of Bangladesh and upstream in the Indian states of Assam and West Bengal.
The FFWC has also warned of the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the Rajshahi, Rangpur, Sylhet, Mymensingh divisions and the adjacent upstream areas of West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh in India from 9am on Wednesday to 9am on Thursday.
The notice added that the water levels of Teesta, Dhala and Dudhkumari rivers in Rangpur division have swelled in the last 24 hours. Over the next 24 hours, the water levels may rise further. The Teesta’s water level may flow above the danger level, while the Dhala and Dudhkumari may exceed the danger level.
The FFWC says that the low-lying areas adjacent to the rivers in the Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur and Kurigram districts may flood, but added that that the water level of the rivers may decrease over the two subsequent days.The forecasting centre added that the water levels of the Ganges and Padma rivers had also increased in the last 24 hours. The water level of the Ganges may remain stable for the next two days, but the water level may decrease over the subsequent three days. The water level of the Padma River may increase in the next three days and may flow at the warning level.
The low-lying areas of the Rajbari, Faridpur, Pabna, Manikganj, Shariatpur, Madaripur, Munshiganj and Dhaka districts along the Padma River may be temporarily flooded during this period. The water levels may remain stable on the fourth and fifth day.
The FFWC says that the water level of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna river system has increased in the past 24 hours. The water level of these rivers may increase in the next three days and may flow at the warning limit. After that, the water level may remain stable for the next two days.
The water levels of the Mahananda, Karatoya, Jamuneshwari, Punarbhaba and Ghaghat rivers in the Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions have increased in the past 24 hours, while the water levels of the Upper Atrai and Tangan rivers have decreased, the FFWC said, adding that the water levels of these rivers may increase over the next three days. The Atrai water level could rise to the warning level during this time.
The forecast added further informed that the water levels of the Someshwari, Bhugai and Kangsha rivers in Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions have risen, while the water levels of the Sarigowain, Jadukata, Lubachra, and Jhalukhali rivers have decreased. The water levels of the Monu, Dhalai, Khwai and Jingiram rivers are stable. The water levels of these rivers may increase in the next 24 hours and decrease over the following two days. The water levels of the Someshwari, Bhugai and Kangsha rivers may flow at the warning level in the next 24 hours.
Higher-than-normal tides are prevailing in the coastal rivers of the Barishal, Khulna, and Chattogram divisions, and the situation may continue for the next three days, the FFWC says.
