The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has summoned the broadcast licence and relevant documentation of private television station Ekattor TV in connection with a case involving alleged crimes against humanity during Hifazat-e Islam’s 2013 gathering at Motijheel Shapla Chattar.

Mozammel Haque Babu, the former managing director of Ekattor Media Limited, and Farzana Rupa, the channel's former principal correspondent, are accused in the case.

In line with the investigation's requirements, the ICT investigation agency sent a formal letter to the office of Ekattor TV's chief executive officer (CEO) on Monday.

The letter, signed by the agency's co-coordinator Muhammed Shahidullah Chowdhury, came to light on Wednesday.

A one-page application from the case's investigating officer was also attached to the letter.

Investigating officer Fateh Md Iftekharul Alam is conducting an inquiry under Section 3(2) of The International Crimes (Tribunals) Act 1973 into allegations of crimes against humanity, according to the letter.

These relate to the events that took place at Motijheel's Shapla Chattar on May 5 and 6, 2013, involving Hifazat. In the interest of this probe, the officer summoned a copy of the government-issued broadcast licence of Ekattor TV and its associated documentation.

Following the investigating officer's application, the agency dispatched the letter to the television channel's Baridhara office, addressed to the CEO, to initiate the necessary procedures.

Considering the matter to be of "national importance", the tribunal's investigation agency has requested the sincere and full cooperation of the Ekattor TV authorities.
