Five farmers have been killed and three others injured after lightning strikes hit haor areas of Sunamganj and Habiganj while a trader has died in Noakhali as Bangladesh enters the peak lightning season.

Police said three people were killed and three others injured in Sunamganj, while two deaths and one injury were reported in Habiganj on Monday, when the trader passed away in Noakhali's Hatia Upazila.

In Sunamganj, Jamir Uddin and Jamir Hossain died in separate incidents in Sadar Upazila in the afternoon, police said.

Abu Salek, 23, was killed in Jamalganj Upazila around the same time, according to a local Union Parishad chairman.

The injured persons are residents of Shantiganj Upazila and received primary treatment.

In Habiganj, Maksud Mia, 35, died in Nabiganj Upazila, while Abdul Salam, 60, was killed in Baniachong Upazila. Another farmer was injured in the same area.

Police said the injured, Samruj Mia, is undergoing treatment at the Upazila Health Complex.

In Noakhali, 21-year-old Md Arafat Hossain was struck by a thunderbolt while returning home from a crop field in Hatia Upazila.

On Sunday, at least 14 people, including an SSC candidate, were killed and several others injured across seven districts in separate lightning incidents.

Authorities said lightning risks have intensified as farmers continue Boro paddy harvesting in Haor regions.

Lightning strikes kill nearly 300 people annually in Bangladesh, with the highest fatalities reported in the northeastern districts of Sunamganj, Netrokona and Sylhet, where agricultural workers are most exposed during the April–May peak season.
