The government has cancelled the dismissal order of police officer Kohinoor Mia, clearing the way for his reinstatement with full service benefits nearly 16.5 years after he was removed from duty.
A Ministry of Home Affairs notification issued on Monday stated that the president has granted a review petition filed by the BCS 12th batch officer.
The order to cancel his dismissal is effective immediately.
The ministry also directed that the period of his dismissal be treated as “active service”, entitling him to all back pay, allowances, and other service-related facilities.
Kohinoor, who last served as a deputy commissioner (DC) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), was dismissed on Oct 4, 2009, during the Awami League administration.
The dismissal followed two departmental cases filed against him.
The latest government order noted that the criminal cases based on the same allegations as the departmental ones resulted in his acquittal.
On Nov 24, 2025, Judge Sabrina Ali of the Mymensingh Additional Sessions Judge’s Second Court acquitted Kohinoor and former Nandail Municipality mayor Abdus Sattar in a 20-year-old murder case.
The case originated from a clash during the Nandail municipal election on May 5, 2004, which left two individuals shot dead.
Kohinoor remained a fugitive throughout the trial proceedings.
He was the superintendent of police in Mymensingh during the 2004 election violence.
His name surfaced in connection with the 2002 Shamsunnahar Hall incident at Dhaka University.
On the night of Jul 23, 2002, police broke through the gates of the female dormitory and assaulted protesting students, an action with which the police officer’s name was often associated.
The president's decision to grant the review petition officially nullifies dismissal, restoring his status within the force.
